ITAPARICA Island, Salvador de Bahía Much of its territory classified as rural areas and buildings, mostly single family homes, occupied by the local population. Almost the entire coastline of the Atlantic side of the Island has been urbanized with housing developments which are mostly sold in individual plots to Brazilian citizens residents in the state of Bahia and foreigners that have been acquiring second-hand homes during the last ten years. The opposite coast known as the "contra-costa" will surely be in the future a pole of tourism development focused on high-end segment of Golf Resort, a phenomenon recently introduced in Brazil. In the late 80s, Club Mediterranee was installed in Itaparica, in the village of Barra Grande. Today is the establishment of the brand with the highest annual average occupancy of all the tourist resorts it has in Brazil. Regarding to the nature and the environment of the island it is in an excellent condition in more than 70% of its surface. Currently there are great efforts from the public administrations in promoting the Bay of All Saints (Bahía de Todos os Santos)and throughout its area of influence in which Itaparica Island is an exceptional player, being already approved by the federal government the laying of a bridge designed to unite the Island with the city of Salvador. This bridge will further facilitate access to the Island to the huge influx of tourists that increases each year to visit the city of Salvador, undoubtedly one of the major tourist destinations in Latin America.
